Our Story
Cancer touches everyone, a mother, a brother, a husband, a wife, a friend, a neighbor. At some point in life, each of us will be confronted with the devastating effects of cancer. Our story started in June 1991 in Westerville, Ohio when Jimmy Bierly was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer of the lymph system. He was just 21 years old. Over the course of the following two years, Jimmy waged a courageous and grueling fight against the disease through aggressive chemotherapy, radiation, and a bone marrow transplant. Countless days and nights were spent at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital with the highest of hopes. Tragically and like so many others, we lost Jimmy on July 20, 1993 at 23, just weeks after graduating summa cum laude from The Ohio State University.
In memory of our son, our brother, our friend, and our neighbor, a small group of family and friends created The Central Ohio Cancer Challenge in 2001. Our wish was simple. Help find a cure for cancer by donating to leading local cancer research organizations and support members of our community in their individual battles with cancer and other life-threatening diseases. And for the past 20+ years, we have been doing just that. With the support and generosity of individuals and organizations within our local community, we achieve this mission through our fundraising efforts that allow us to make annual contributions to The James – Comprehensive Cancer Center, OhioHealth Foundation Hospice, and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. To date, we’ve donated over $180,000 to worthwhile local charities and organizations. You are helping to make a difference!
How You Can Help
Since Jimmy’s battle with cancer was lost nearly 30 years ago, we are all fortunate to have witnessed significant advances with the diagnosis and treatment of many forms of cancer. One day soon, we envision that scientists and doctors will find a cure. To do so however, critical resources are still needed and that’s where you can help. Each June, The Central Ohio Cancer Challenge hosts an annual charity golf outing, The Challenge. This year’s event will be held on Friday, June 9, 2023 at St. Albans Golf Club.
Registration is open to everyone: individual or teams. Space is limited so register early online, no later than May 31. Unable to attend The Challenge? Show your support by sponsoring a hole on the day of the outing with an individual sponsorship ($100) or a corporate sponsorship ($250). Sponsorships can be designated in your name, your company’s name, or in memory of a loved one or friend and placed throughout the golf course.
As part of our fundraising efforts, we are also selling $10 raffle tickets for a chance to win a pair of highly coveted 2023 OSU Buckeye season football tickets. The drawing will be held on the afternoon of Friday, June 9, 2023 at the conclusion of The Challenge. The winner need not be present to win, and anyone can enter by purchasing a ticket online or from any of our volunteers selling tickets throughout the community. Purchase raffle tickets or donate through any of our other fundraisers in-person or online through our website using any major credit card. The Central Ohio Cancer Challenge is a registered non-profit organization with the Ohio Secretary of State (#1694411).
